Tim Mathijs (born Timothy Peter Mathijs; 1 August 1973) is a Dutch politician who has been 6th and current president since 20 August 2023.

Mathijs is the first only nation's leader, who before becoming president, was a governor. He became a senator in 1999 and worked as Enschede governor from 2007 to 2010.

Furthermore, Mathijs lost presidential nominations in 2012 (to Donat Grizan) and 2019 (to future leader Jakob Zinkeern), before winning this and then defeated nationalist president Karel Kerezic.

As a president, Mathijs applied progressive taxes in domestic politics, prepared a climate change mitigation program with social-democracy and green politics. He also ordered a severe restriction on the use of weapons. In foreign policy, Mathijs continued his full support for Ukraine and remained neutral in the Gaza strip conflict, but expressed support for the International Criminal Court for issuing an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu.

Biography

[edit]

Mathijs was born in Amsterdam and has one sister, Maria. He graduated from the University of Amsterdam (1998) with degree of Master in Law. He also holds bachelor degree in economics from the same university.[2] He revealed that he began to fight for climate change and waste reduction when, at the age of 20, he saw a video about the future of Earth.[3]

He taught economics from 1998 to 2007 at the University of Amsterdam.[4]

In 2006, Mathijs book ‘Hollandse Overmoed — Hoe de beste economie van de wereld despoorde’ was published. A year later, he was involved in the translation of Alan Greenspan’s biography ‘Een Turbulente Tijd’. In 2009 and 2011, Mathijs with Coen Teulings wrote "The Great Recession" and "Europe in Crisis". It included the economic crisis he faced while he was governor.

Governor of Enschede (2007-2010)

[edit]

Mathijs's work as an Enschede governor coincided with Financial crisis of 2007–08.[5] From 2007 to 2010 he was the 8th governor of Enschede.[6]

2012 presidential campaign

[edit]

In 2012, Mathijs lost presidential nomination to Donat Grizan, but became his vicepresident. They went on to lose Alina Golubic and Krista Sukic.

2019 presidential campaign

[edit]

Although he was the main favorite, Mathijs lost nomination to Zinkeern in 2019. Zinkeern then offered to make Mathijs his running mate, but he declined. On 21 April, when Zinkeern's victory was announced, Mathijs called him on the phone to congratulate him, but did not attend his subsequent inauguration. Mathijs supported Zinkeern's idea for term reduction amendments. However, he called Zinkeern's decision to resign a mistake that allowed Karel Kerezic to become president and take the country to the "radical right."

2023 presidential campaign

[edit]

On November 2022, Mathijs officially confirmed that he would try to seek the post of president for the third time. During the year of the covid pandemic, he criticized Kerezic's government, saying that its system of free movement and weak control of the virus had resulted in more deaths than if it had chosen containment tactics. He emphasized the worst human rights record in history, the cost of climate change denialism and the avoidance of helping Ukraine when the war broke out. During the presidential campaign, he spoke out many times against militarism and compulsory military service. He also mentioned about the possibility of making it easier for foreigners to acquire Dutch cizitenship. His program also included a proposal to switch to a four-day work during week.

On 9 January 2023, Mathijs became official candidate to 2023 presidential election.

In February 2023, he had first debates with President Karel Kerezic.

Presidency (2023-present)

[edit]

Mathijs' victory was confirmed on 5 August 2023.[7]

Tim Mathijs presidential inauguration was held on 20 August 2023.[8] Three former presidents Sanken, Arun Golubic and Zinkeern with their first lady wives participated in inauguration. Dahlia Lima was sworn as new vicepresident.

On February 2024, speaking about needing of progressive taxes, Mathijs spoke: "Rich people have to pay more taxes than poor people. Is there anyone who does not think this is a good principle? Those who are rich can and should contribute more. Progressive taxation ensures equalization and is therefore a form of civilization."

On November 2024, Mathijs supported the International Criminal Court's verdict to issue an arrest warrant to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mathijs also assured that Netanyahu would have been detained as soon as he crossed the Dutch border.[9]

On 10 February 2025, speaking to former President Freddy Sanken at the Orange Palace, Mathijs said that "there is a possibility that I will step down from the presidency before the end of term". He also added that "we currently are speaking with my doctors and we are talking about the best decision about my health." In the next day, Mathijs officially confirmed that he would not seek re-election and would retire in 2027. [10] He also added that he would support Vice President Dahlia Lima's candidacy in the 2027 presidential election.

"The Virgin of the Netherlands holds a poster reading 'unity is strength' on the painted ceiling of the Trêves room where the cabinet meets." Text may also be added: harmony not for sale. Don't hide political problems under a mountain of money. Solving problems without money, is it possible? Yes. Not millions for asphalt, but for road pricing. Not a sustainable subsidy, but CO₂ pricing. A higher minimum wage but without the expensive AOW link. And in the field of low-cost healthcare. You can feel the anger bubbling up with each of these suggestions. But we will work hard so that people can trust us more. Thank you for the opportunity to be your president."

—Tim Mathijs inauguration, 20 August 2023[11]

Health, religion and personal life

[edit]

Mathijs is married with publisher Justine Herbert since 1996 and they have three children. His parents were non-religious and he identified himself as an atheist.

On 11 September 2023, six weeks after starting work, Mathijs was rushed to hospital. It was later announced that he suffered brain aneurysm and had undergone surgery, named clipping.[12] Doctors named surgery "life saving". After surgery, Mathijs was transferred to the intensive care. Former president Jacob Zinkeern[13], party members Jasper Vidam and Dahlia Lima and consul Temirlan Erlanov visited him in the hospital. Former president Freddy Sanken wished him health in his Facebook's video.[14] Mathijs later returned home on 27 September, after spending 16 days at hospital. He officially continued to work from 13 November.

Mathijs' hobbies are history, work in the archives and literature. He cited Het Financieele Dagblad as his favourite newspaper.[15]
